Getting a high ranking in Google can have a big impact on the success of your business. You can get an search engine optimization expert to make changes to your website to make it SEO friendly, or do it yourself. Here are 3 steps to doing it yourself.
Step 1: Keyword Research
Think of the keywords your customer would type into Google to search for your products or services. Multiple keyword phrases work best like "Search engine optimization uk" instead of just "optimisation", since it is more targeted to what your customers are looking for.
Brainstorm ideas with your team and write down as many as you can think of. Consider geographical areas like "search engine optimisation london" if they are important to your customer. You can also get ideas from your competitor’s websites.
Choose 2 keyword phrases you think would be searched for the most. Keep in mind that the more competitive a keyword, the harder it will be to get a ranking. To see how competitive a keyword phrase is do a search in Google with your phrase in quotes for example, "search engine optimisation" and check the number of competing sites under the search field.
Choose 2 keyword phrases that have low competition (under 10,000 sites) and are relevant to your business.
Step 2: Webpage Copy
Web page copy just concerns the text on your web pages. As well as making sure your web copy reads well to promote your products and services, you need to include your chosen keyword phrase in each page in the following way;
Include your keywords in headings, as far to the left as you can.
Place keywords at the top of the page too.
Put your keyword in bold where you can.
Instead of having links on your page saying "click here" use the keyword phrase i.e. "Find out more about Search engine optimisation here"
An important tip is to also include these keywords in your HTML title, description and keywords tags. If you are not sure how to do this, ask your web designer.
Remember to keep adding useful content in the form of articles that would help your readers understand a particular topic.
Step 3: Linking
Each link from another website to your website is considered by search engines as a vote of popularity for your website and this will improve your rankings.
But the quality of the links is important. A link from a relevant site to your topic that has a good authority in Google is better than a link from an unrelated site or a site that isn’t highly regarded by Google.
You can look around for good sites that are relevant to your site and ask for links from those websites.
An easier way to get links though is to write articles on your chosen keywords and submit them to an article directory like EzineArticles.com. This way you get a link from a high authority website on your topic without even having to ask for it.
How do you monitor and improve your SEO results?
